Swimmers and club members are celebrating at Driffield Junior Amateur Swimming Club following their promotion from the 3rd division of the Ridings League.
It has been almost 13 years since the club was last known to get promotion so this is a truly fantastic achievement for the local swimming club.
The talented team of swimmers travelled to Malton knowing a win would clinch the League 3 Division title. The other teams competing were Derwent Valley, Filey and Beverley Barracudas.
With success within reaching distance the swimmers got off to a rather tentative start with nerves playing a part in the early stages. Driffield had enjoyed a comfortable win in the last Ridings gala but there was no place for complacency as the swimmers knew they had to swim at their best. All the hard work and training came into play as each swimmer gave 100% realising that this was going to be a significant day for their club.
The early relay races proved to be a strength for Driffield swimmers, and the points stared to mount. It was then down to the individuals to compete at their best and aim for first places.
When the final relay race had been swum, the team waited on poolside for the final announcement. There was elation as Driffield were announced league winners and accepted the gala trophy with pride. To complete a great night the swimmers also managed to break a further 6 Ridings Records.
Josh Simons, Senior Coach said “The kids deserve this promotion and recognition and it reflects all the hard they have put in over the past 2 years, well done to them all. We look forward to competing in Division 2”.
The winning team included Kristian Taylor-Deville, Charlie Rice, Adam Alcock, James Haynes, Emma Palmer, Summer Gommersal, Jessica Humble, Alice Oakley, Sam Trueman, Max Gilbart, Reuben Kelly, William Thomson, Amelia Lawrence, Martha Kelly, Katie Pickering, Sam Clark, William Atkinson, Sam Birks, Eleanor Thomson, Jenny Welburn, Beth Oakley, Sarah Darlington, Ben Holland, Stephen Sowersby, Herjan Franco, David Dale, Eleanor Darlington and Molly Goodlass.
A huge thank you to all swimmers, parents, poolside helpers, coaches and volunteers for all their hard work and tireless enthusiasm.
